Danish leading woman of German films who became one of the greatest stars of the silent era. A native of the Copenhagen suburb of Vesterbro, Nielsen was the daughter of a coppersmith and a washerwoman, both of whom died before Nielsen was fifteen. Her stage debut came as a child in the chorus of the Kongelige Teater's production of Boito's opera "Mephistopheles." She studied at the Royal Theatre School of Copenhagen and embarked upon a stage career in her late teens. She toured Scandinavia and became one of the highest-paid and most popular stage actresses of her time and place. In 1909, director Urban Gad suggested that the silent screen would allow her to transcend her Danish language barrier, and she agreed appear in his film 'Afgrunden (1910)'. The film was successful and Nielsen was encouraged to continue in this new art form. A German distributor, Paul Davidson, invited Nielsen to Germany, where he was building a film studio which would eventually become Europe's largest--the Universum Film Union A.-G. (or Ufa). Nielsen and her director, Gad, whom she had married, went to Germany and spent the next quarter century there. She became one of the true superstars of the silent screen, a tragic heroine whose photograph during the First World War accompanied German and also British and French troops into battle. Among her notable films after the war was a version of "Hamlet, " which was not so much a Shakespearean film as it was an exploration of a then-current theory that the real Hamlet had been, in fact, a woman. Nielsen played the title role. She continued to play a wide variety of roles in Germany and occasionally in Denmark and Norway, never losing the respect and popularity she had maintained almost from the beginning of her career. She abandoned her film work just as sound was taking over the industry. Aside from one or two brief forays in talkies, her acting was thereafter confined to the stage. She died in 1972 at the age of 89, shortly after her fifth marriage.- Actor

Henning Moritzen is a well-known Danish screen and stage actor. Born in Tårbæk near Copenhagen and with a secondary school degree from Grønnevangsskolen in Ordrup, Henning Mortizen was educated as an actor at Privatteatrenes Elevskole. Since the early 1950s he has been a stage actor with countless successes, especially The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, earning a reputation as one of the great male leads of Danish theatre. His work shows a high degree of variation, from comedy to musical to drama, modern as well as classical. To his stage career came the natural addition of film and television work of which Harry and the Butler (1961), Hjemme hos William (1971) and Memories of a Marriage (1989) can be mentioned as highpoints. And even later, the international success The Celebration (1998) gave him a strong part as the dominant father.- Actor

Kim Schumacher, born December 15, 1949, was a famous radio DJ and TV host in Denmark between 1982 and 1990.
Kim started as a DJ at Danmarks Radio (the only Danish radio station at that time) in 1982, and made a true revolution. Back then there was no such thing as a radio DJ, the term was more like 'radio host', as records would be cued up and handled by a technician, and started by the host by pressing a button - If it was a live show. Kims first many broadcasts were taped in advance - again using technicians to handle the technology. The technician would be on the technology side of the studios glass wall, and this scenario was to change during the eighties.
Kim introduced young danish listeners to break dance, rap, remixes & mega mixes - and opened up our eyes for a completely new world of music, which was almost invisible and inaudible at consumer outlets. Kim Schumacher helped push modern dance type music to the point where it became more ordinary. Also Kim pushed the limit for the experience of listening to the radio, and much innovation and creativity was seen in the radio field in that decade, with Kim placed in the core of development. Certainly compared to the 3 previous decades of radio services the eighties became a wake-up call to the people controlling the danish radio in 1982.
At that time many young people simply taped his broadcasts. The music he played was very new and unique and his speaks fast yet timed perfectly to the individual records.
On some occasions Kim Schumacher appeared on television, both as video presenter and video jockey (programs such as 1999, Harakiri and Videosynet) and as a game-show host on TV (Labyrint and Kims Corner) - but he remains best remembered for his many radio broadcasts.
Kim died of AIDS June 12, 1990 - only 40 years old. But he was not forgotten. Both in 1996 and 1997 Peer Kaae released a double CD with bits and pieces from Kim's broadcasts. These were made by Jacob Lund from a local radio station The Voice in Copenhagen who cut Kims comments out of old broadcasts and fit them with CD quality 7" versions of the songs Kim played, although Kim played obscure versions that were either mixed or remixed, for copyrights reasons only the normal versions of the songs were used. 2 kroner per disc set were given to AIDS Fondet to help their work to fight the disease.
As the Internet began to gain popularity, people started writing together about Kim Schumacher - a few of these people discovered that many people still kept their taped recordings with Kim Schumacher. Today over 200 radio and TV recordings are known to exist - more or less complete.
The site www.kimschumacher.dk has become a tribute to Kim Schumacher and a handy database for those into the music he played, a discography for collectors of the music and the source of information on artists you do not hear much about and who may or may not have been active since the eighties. The site contains information about all the broadcasts he made, the records he played and noting the speak he did over the records - a hard job, which takes a lot of time.- Actor

She studied art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where she met her first husband Einar Wegener. They married in 1904 and he became her model as Lili Elbe. The couple eventually moved to Paris, where her husband/model felt free to appear in public sometimes as Einar Wegener and sometimes as Lili Elbe. Along with her art pushing boundaries, her work in the fashion industry took off as she illustrated for magazines such as Fantasio, Vogue, and La Vie Parisienne. In 1931 her husband Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe died of complications during the completion of his gender reassignment. Gerda Wegener remarried with the Italian Major Fernando Porta. She held her last exhibition in 1939, but by this time, her artwork was out of style as the simpler Functionalism had become more popular in the 1930s. Gerda Wegener passed away back in Denmark in 1940.

Steffen Hegelund Knudsen was a Danish citizen and was originally a trained gardener but moved to Central America in the 1980s. He lived in Central and South America for a number of years, working for several aid organizations as well as having numerous other positions. The time in here made him fluent in Spanish.
During the siege of the Japanese embassy in Lima in 1996, he was recruited by Danish state television channel DR1 as an on-site reporter, covering the event hour by hour. This led to a permanent job at DR1 and he moved back to Denmark.
Steffen Hegelund Knudsen's preferred field of work was international politics and armed conflicts around the globe. As one of only a handful of European reporters, he was an embedded reporter during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Here he was embedded in the US 101st Combat Aviation Brigade and reported from airlifted nocturnal air raids deep into enemy territory.
Steffen Hegelund Knudsen always sought to process and present facts in a simplistic, impartial, and non-sensational way. At the time that he was diagnosed fatally ill from ALS disease, at the age of 43, he was in the process of making Egyptian Arabic his third native language in order to better convey news and facts in an independent manner.- Jenny Blicher-Clausen was born on 29 July 1865 in Durup, Denmark.
